DeKALB, Ill. - With her signing of the National Letter of Intent, Abigail Dekkinga has a committed to playing for the Northern Illinois women's tennis team, starting in the fall of 2014. The two-star recruit from Allegan, Mich. is the sister of current Huskie, senior Haley Dekkinga.
"She might be listed as a two-star recruit, but her potential is much greater," said Head Coach Ryun Ferrell. "She's a true diamond in the rough."
Dekkinga has attended the Allegan Senior High School over the last few years, being coached under Jen Aldrich. She holds a 26-25 record over the last year, including 17 wins against other nationally rated high school tennis players. Among Michigan players, Dekkinga has earned a top-20 rating from TennisRecruiting.net for her performance.
Dekkinga's most recent tournament victory came in the Battle Creek Jr. Open, held from February 1 to February 3 earlier this year in Battle Creek, Mich. In that event, she took down two rated players, Kate Mader (524) and Melania Jagiarz (484), on her way to victory. She also did not drop a single set along the way, only once allowing her opponent to take three points in a set.
Abigail will be the only Dekkinga sister on the team next season, as Haley is playing her final season at NIU. The Huskies will lose two players before the 2014 season overall, as Ilse Pacheco is also in her fourth season with the team. The other seven members are set to return as of now, giving the women's tennis team eight players to start the fall season in 2014.
