NIU Women's Tennis Signs Two Players for 2009-10 Season
Dec. 26, 2008
DEKALB, Ill. - Northern Illinois head women's tennis coach Ryun Ferrell added two more key members to his 2009-10 roster, with the official signings of Brittni Fausett and Kelly Phillips. Both players will have four years of eligibility beginning in the 2009 fall season. Fausett, a native of Cameron, Texas, is in her senior year at Cameron High School, where she played for head coach Stacy Morrow. She is currently ranked the No. 11 player in the state of Texas, and 186th nationally, according to TennisRecruiting.net. The 5-foot-5 Fausett was named the 2008 Central Texas Athlete of the Year, and is a two-time Texas High School State Champion. She is also a state qualifier in golf, and two-time regional qualifier in cross country at Cameron High School. Fausett is a member of the National Honor Society, and Who's Who Among American High School Students. "Brittni is probably a little bit more of a finished product than most recruits we have brought in freshmen," said Ferrell. "She is a very talented player, and hits a very big ball, with two fists on both sides (forehand and backhand). Her athleticism will be a key addition to our program." Phillips, a Newburgh, N.Y., native, is in her senior season at Newburgh Free Academy. TennisRecruiting.net ranks her as the No. 14 player in New York, and 206th nationally. The 5-foot-8, right-handed Phillips plays for high school head coach J.C. Gaspard, and has served as Newburgh Academy's No. 1 singles player since 2005. Phillips captured gold medal honors at the 2008 Empire State Games, going 5-0 in the singles flight. She has participated in Ed Krass' College Tennis Academy in each of the last three summers. "Kelly is an amazing athlete," Ferrell said. "I really believe she is going to be a diamond in the rough, because she already knows how to train and lift, and is a physical specimen. She has the ability to stay out on the court forever, and can really battle. As we get her into our system, I think Kelly is going to be an asset for our program, and a nice addition to our team next season."
