CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Newcomer Nancy Nieto took fourth place in the 1-mile and 1,000-meter runs, highlighting the Northern Illinois track and field team's outing at the Carle/Health Alliance Invitational, Saturday.
Nieto (Elgin, Ill./Streamwood) ran the mile in 5:18.68, and finished to 1,000 in 3:09.20, both top times by a Huskie this year. Sophomore Sunsea Shaw (South Bend, Ind./Riley) also scored in the 1,000, taking fifth place with a time of 3:10.63.
"Nancy ran very well in both the mile and the 1,000," head coach Connie Teaberry said. "She's continuing to represent NIU with tremendous competitive spirit."
As a team, the Huskies took sixth with 32 total points. Illinois, the event host, took first with 155.5 points.
Senior Shoshanna Brown (Plainfield, Ill./Romeoville) added to the Huskie point total with a fourth place finish in the triple jump. She leapt 37-6.75, tying a team season best. Junior Brittany Houghton (Freeport, Ill./Dakota) took seventh in the event with a 36-0.25 mark. Houghton also placed seventh in the long jump with a 17-9.00 bound. Junior Jessica Statler (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Cedar Rapids Prairie) ensured the Huskies would score in all three jump events, placing fifth with a top mark of 5-4.25 in the high jump.
Sophomore Breanna Brevitt (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) also got her name on the board, taking seventh in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 11:11.82.
"The team really competed, and we're looking forward to getting back at it next week at Eastern Illinois," Teaberry said.
The Huskies return to competition Jan. 31 at the Illinois Intercollegiate, in Charleston, Ill.harleston, Ill.
