Gregory Sets 100-Meter Hurdle Record to Kick-Off Outdoor Season

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Northern Illinois women's track and field team kicked-off its 2010 outdoor season in fine fashion Saturday when Megan Gregory broke the NIU school record in the 100-meter hurdles and the Huskies recorded six top-three performances at the UNLV Track Classic at the Myron Partridge Stadium and Sheila Tarr-Smith Field in Las Vegas, Nev. Sophomore Megan Gregory (Chicago, Ill./Plainfield North) added her name to the Northern Illinois record books for the second time Saturday when she raced to a time of 14.52 in the 100-meter hurdles. Gregory, who holds the NIU 60-meter hurdles indoor record, personal-best time broke the 100-meter hurdle record which was previously set in 2004 by Jenin Robinson with a time of 14.53. "Coming off a disappointing finish at the MAC Championships, the girls came out to UNLV and competed very well," head track and field coach Connie Teaberry said. "We had a lot of top-five finishers at this meet and for the girls to come out and do as well as they did, it shows the level of focus the girls came into this meet with." Jenner Sio (Rockford, Ill./Christian Life) saw the Huskies top finish of the evening when she finished first in the triple jump event with a mark of 36-01.50. Sio set a personal-best record in the event. Deidra McIntosh (Rockford, Ill./Christian Life) and Brittany Houghton (Freeport, Ill./Dakota) leapt to success in the long jump when they finished second and third, respectively. McIntosh leapt to a mark of 17-10.25 while Houghton finished third with a leap of 17-04.00. Rounding out the field events, Cora Caulfield (Fox Lake, Ill./Grant) finished third in the discus when she threw a mark of 147-10.
Tiffany Wallick (Fisher, Ill./Fisher) and Mary Bull (Peoria, Ill./Lewiston) set personal records in the shot put event. Wallick threw a personal best 38-03.5, while Bull notched a personal mark of 39-02.50. On the track side, Courtney Oldenburg (West Salem, Wis./West Salem) finished third in the 800-meter run, when she raced to a personal-best time of 2:17.75. The Wisconsin native also led the Huskies in the 1500-meter run, clocking in with a sixth-place and personal-best time of 4:40.31. Amanda Trancoso and Heather Childs raced to personal records in the 800m, finishing in times of 2:25.33 and 2:31.55, respectively. Kathryn Downin also notched a PR in the event racing to a time of 2:35.03. Houghton, Rasheta Butler (Chicago, Ill./Percy L. Julian), Rebecca Cronin (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) and Rochelle Muskeyvalley (Rock Island, Ill./Rock Island) comprised the Huskies 4x400-meter relay team that finished third at the classic. The Huskies raced to a time of 3:55.95 in the event. Butler, Chanel Kellyman (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Pope John Paul II), Roneisha Frye (Fairview Heights, Ill./Belleville East), Camille Smith (Calumet City, Ill./Seton Academy) and Rhonda Lee (Flint, Mich./Carman-Ainsworth) each earned personal records at the classic. Butler and Kellyman tied for fourth in the 100-meter dash, as each finished the race in a time of 28.28. Butler carried her success into the 200-meter dash finishing in a PR time of 25.28, while Frye set a personal best 25.62 in the event. Musekyvalley and Smith notched personal record in the 400-meter dash, racing to times of 58.24 and 59.05, respectively. In the 400-meter dash, Smith, Muskeyvalley and Lee each notched personal records. Muskeyvalley finished fourth with a time of 58.24 while Muskeyvalley "As a coaching staff we are proud of how the girls came out and performed today," said Teaberry. "We are happy to get a chance to work outside. This opportunity will allow us to continue training and will help us improve our finishes as we enter the outdoor season." NIU will head back into action April 4-6 when the Huskies travel to Austin, Texas to compete in the Texas Relays hosted by the University of Texas. |
