AUSTIN, Texas - The Northern Illinois track & field team began their weekend at the 86th annual Texas Relays Thursday.
Jenelle McCalla was the only Huskie competing on the day. The senior took third place in the second heat of the 400 hurdles en route to a 69th place finish.
"Today, Jenelle kicked off our competition at the Texas Relays," said NIU head coach Connie Teaberry. "Although the time nor place reflect her ability, she had some solid execution moments throughout the race. The 400 hurdles is an event you have to practice outside to get your rhythm and, unfortunately, she hasn't been able to practice outdoors yet."
McCalla, the school's record holder in the event, clocked in at 1:05.91 in the preliminaries. The Whitby, Ontario native beat Rice's Belle McFarlane and Southern University's Maya Anderson to the line, while easily outdistancing Jenna Duncan of Tarleton State and Geneva Anderson of UT-Pan American.
The Huskies continue with their weekend Friday with a busy day in two states. NIU's sprinters continue their stay in the Lone Star State, while NIU's distance athletes and top field athletes compete at North Carolina State's Raleigh Relays.
