ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Northern Illinois track & field team earned two event titles and a school record-setting performance Friday at the Chicagoland Championships.
The Huskies sit in third place after the second day of action with 29 points. North Central leads with 32.5 points, while the host Lewis Flyers are in second with 32. Of the 19 teams in the field, nine are within 13 points of the lead heading into tomorrow's jam-packed finale.
Natalie Tarter opened the day for NIU by bringing home a win in the heptathlon with a school record 4,206 points. After sitting in second midway through the event, Tarter moved ahead with a win in the long jump. However, she would need a win in the 800 meters to hold off North Central's Jocelyn Redlinski in the final standings, as Tarter edged Redlinski by a mere 13 points.
Sidra Sherrill earned a victory in the shot put with a toss of 45-07.75 (13.91m), topping Loyola's Alison Szykowny by nearly four feet. Not far behind was freshman Olivia Herzog, who took sixth with a 40-09.00 (12.42m) mark.
In the high jump, Ida Burbulla earned a tie for third with a 5-00.25 (1.53m) leap. Meanwhile, Alexandra Schad just missed out on scoring by placing ninth in the long jump at 16-11.50 (5.17m).
Alexis Capps was NIU's lone competitor on the track, placing 35th in the 5000 meters with a personal best time of 19:08.51.
The action continues tomorrow with a full slate of action beginning at 9 a.m. from Lewis Stadium as the Huskies look to defend their Chicagoland Championship crown.
