KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Northern Illinois track & field team wrapped up competition at the Sea Ray Relays Saturday with Huskies competing in four events.
The highlight of the day came from NIU's 4x100 relay team, which placed fifth with a time of 47.73.
"The second day of competition did not yield the results the staff was looking for," said NIU head coach Connie Teaberry. "However, we did see some improvement in technique. We hope to get outside this week to fine tune and prepare for our home competition."
Composed of Alicia Osley, Chanel Kellyman, Brittany Smith and Megan Gregory, the NIU 4x100 relay earned a top five finish on the day by beating out Division II power Bellarmine, Eastern Kentucky and Southeast Missouri State in the final standings. Their time of 47.73 was the Huskies' best time in the event since the Texas Relays.
In the shot put, Sidra Sherrill tossed 44-05.50 (13.55m) to take 14th place in the highly competitive field that included multiple All-American Felisha Johnson of Indiana State and Purdue's Dani Branch. Fellow Huskie Olivia Herzog placed 22nd with a distance of 38-05.00 (11.71m).
Alex Schad rounded out NIU's competitors on the day in the long jump. The sophomore leapt 16-08.50 (5.09m) to claim 20th place.
The Huskies come back to DeKalb next weekend to host the 2013 Huskie Open Saturday, April 20. The action gets underway at 10 a.m. at the NIU Track & Field Complex. Meanwhile, NIU's Meghan Heuer and Jamie Burr will take part in the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays Thursday in southern California, in addition to running in the Beach Invitational Saturday morning.
