WALNUT, Calif. – Running in the warmth of southern California, the Northern Illinois University track & field team turned in some season- and career-best runs among its contingent Friday at the Mt. SAC Relays.
Meghan Heuer (St. Charles, Ill./North) and Ali Olson (New Auburn, Wis./Bloomer) clinched automatic berths to the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships in the 1500 meters, while Hannah Savage (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) and Jamie Burr (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) each posted season-best marks in the 1500 and 800 meters, respectively.
"It was another strong day for our middle distance group," said NIU assistant coach Greg Hipp. "They train hard, but more than anything they compete tough every weekend. It's exciting to see Jamie, Meghan, Ali and Hannah really buy into what Coach (Connie) Teaberry and I are asking of the team."
Heuer opened the day by running 4:29.78 in the 1500 meters, placing 43rd overall in the field of 130-plus runners and topping her career-best by two seconds. Two heats later, Olson crossed the finish line at 4:30.98 to punch her ticket to Athens, Ohio, and beat her personal record by nearly three seconds. Savage capped off the event with a 4:40.46 clip, beating her PR by over two seconds.
Later on in the 800 meters, Burr ran a time of 2:16.31 to place 86th. The time beat her previous season-best clip by nearly four seconds.
The Huskies continue with competition tomorrow, as Burr, Heuer, Olson and Savage will run in the Beach Invitational. Meanwhile, the rest of the team will compete in Chicago, Ill., at the Blue Demon Invitational.
