AKRON, Ohio - Northern Illinois senior Janay Mitchell (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck HS) took third place in the 100 meters, added a point to the Huskies' team total with an eighth-place finish in the 200 meters and ran on the 4 x 100 meter relay team that collected another point to lead NIU at the 2013 Mid-American Conference Championships Saturday.

NIU finished the championships with 11 points to finish in 11th place. Kent State (169 points) out-distanced Akron (119 points) to win the title. The Huskies were 12 points behind 10th place Bowling Green.

Mitchell's third place finish in the 100 meters was the best result of the weekend for NIU. Her time of 11.86 seconds was two tenths of a second behind winner Diona Graves of Miami (Ohio). She ran 24.39 in the 200 meters final, while the 4 x 100 team of Mitchell, Brittany Smith, Chanel Kellyman and Alicia Osley ran 47.13.

NIU Head Coach Connie Teaberry was pleased with the Huskies' effort Saturday.

"On the final day of competition, we competed well," Teaberry said. "Although it did not equate to a lot of points on the board, the ladies gave it everything they had. The staff is proud of the effort of our athletes. This group has been through a lot this season but they never gave up on the team and their goals."

Sophomore Jamie Burr (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska HS) accounted for the Huskies' remaining point on Saturday with an eighth place finish in the finals of the 800 meters with a time of 2:14.36.

Thrower Sidra Sherrill (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop HS) took 10th place in the discus with a throw of 142-7. Natalie Tarter (Batavia, Ill./Batavia HS) jumped 5-1 in the high jump. Juliane Totzke (Graefenroda, Germany/Carl Zeiss Gymnasium)ran 18:25.96 in the 5,000 meters and the 4 x 400 relay team of Jenelle McCalla, Kristal Pitts, Alicia Osley and Alexandra Rowe posted a time of 3:55.38 to round out the Huskies' results Saturday.

Teaberry said one of the keys for the Huskies in becoming more competitive at the MAC Championships will be to bring more qualifiers to the meet.

"We need more athletes qualified and more athletes in more events," she said. "There were too many events where we were not a factor. We will work hard; the future is bright."
