ATHENS, Ohio - The Huskies and rest of the MAC began the 2014 MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday. Day 1 featured the bulk of the heptathlon as well as two other events that Huskies competed in, including the javelin and 10000 meter run.
Logan Tillmon was NIU's lone competitor in the javelin. It was her first time officially competing in the event at any sort of track meet. She made her farthest throw on the third attempt, ending at 103-02 (31.44m).
Juliane Totzke participated in the day's big run, the 10000 meter. She was able to pull off a top-10 finish in the event, clocking in at 36:26.20. The time was less than three seconds off of Tozky's personal best and program record time of 36:23.93, which she set in April of 2012.
Over in the heptathlon, which is still ongoing, Tillmon along with Latesha Bigby and Claudette Day competed in four events, the high jump, 100 meter hurdles, 200 meter dash, and shot put. Each had their fair share of strong performances. Day was the highest scoring Huskie, finishing Day 1 with 3264 points. She is third overall in the heptathlon and just 83 points away from leaders Sarah Chauchard (Eastern Michigan) and Emma Siuciak (Buffalo).
Bigby also broke 3000 points on Day 1, finishing with 3095. Tillmon added a couple top-five finishes in the events for herself to finish with 2844. The trio will finish the heptathlon with the long jump, javelin, and 800 meter run on Friday, May 16. Scores and place finishes for the heptathlon can be found in the notes below.
Much more is to come for the Huskies at the MAC Championships. On Friday specifically, NIU will have three competitors outside of the heptathlon. Sidra Sherrill and Tydra Beckham will compete in the shot put at 12:30 p.m. Ali Olsen will be NIU's lone runner in the 3000 meter steeplechase, set to begin at 4:20 p.m. Both times are central.
