school record at 3,000 meters highlights Huskie Track and Field
weekend at Iowa State
AMES, IA---These days, Northern Illinois University senior Alicja
Czajka has to find ways to out-do herself. Mission accomplished.
Czajka shattered the school record in the 3,000-meter run and took
home fourth place to lead the Huskie women's track and field team
at the Iowa State Classic Saturday (Feb. 12)---widely considered
to be one of the most prestigious indoor meets in the country.
Czajka (Swarzedz, Poland / Poznan)---who has rewritten most of the
NIU record book for distance running since becoming a Huskie three
years ago---became the first runner in school history to break the
10-minute barrier at 3,000 meters, crossing the line at 9:41.82
in Ames. The Swarzedz, Poland, native was the old school record
holder as well after running a 10:00.82 at the Hawkeye Open back
on Jan. 18, 2003.
In addition to annihilating the school standard, Czajka also finished
just under seven seconds from the NCAA provisional qualifying mark
of 9:35 and just over five seconds behind the top collegiate runner
in the event---Amanda Bales of Missouri---who paced a 9:36.59. Unattached
competitor Rasa Michniovaite won the event with a time of 9:28.42.
The senior wasn't the only one making waves, however, as sophomore
Elizabeth Berquist (Toddville, IA / Alburnett) took home
a top-15 finish in the high jump. Berquist cleared five feet, five
inches to finish 12th overall. Thrower Lindsay Chamberlain
(Oconee, IL / Pana) got into the act as well, grabbing 14th place
in the weight throw with a toss of 55 feet, 7.50 inches.
Junior Ajahnae Hinley (Chicago, IL / Whitney Young) pulled
double duty at ISU and was still able to post a season-best time
of :58.43 in the 400-meter dash that was good enough for 52nd place
in the final tally. Hinley also competed in the 200-meter dash and
finished 108th with a :26.58.
Northern Illinois goes to the opposite end of the spectrum and stays
a bit more local for its next competition. The Huskies travel to
Romeoville, IL, Friday (Feb. 18) to compete in the Chicagoland Championships.
Action is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. (CST).
