DeKALB, Ill. – Following a one-week break, the Northern Illinois University track & field team returns to action this weekend with split-squad action at Grand Valley State and Purdue.
The Huskies’ distance squad competes Friday and Saturday at the GVSU Big Meet, while the rest of the team heads to West Lafayette, Ind., Saturday for the Fred Wilt Boilermaker Invitational.
“This weekend is important for our student-athletes concerning MAC positioning,” said NIU head coach Connie Teaberry. “We have two weeks before the MAC Indoor Championships, which means time is running out to get qualifying marks. If the athletes haven't already, we must put together solid performances so they're not scrambling the last competition looking for that berth to MAC. We are headed into meets with competitive competition to get them qualified. Our ladies are physically ready.”
Two weeks ago, NIU posted several highlight performances at the Indiana Relays. Leading the way was Claudette Day, who tied the school record in the long jump with a leap of 18-08.50 (5.70m), claiming seventh in the invitational section. Additionally, seven different individuals posted new career-bests in the two-day meet.
This weekend, the Huskies will go head-to-head with numerous top-notch programs. At GVSU, over 50 teams make up the field from all three NCAA divisions and the NAIA. Meanwhile, the meet at Purdue features the host Boilermakers, Butler, IPFW and Division II power Lincoln (Mo.), along with Charleston (W.Va.) and NAIA member Taylor.
Live meet results will be available on GVSULakers.com (Grand Valley State) and DeltaTiming.com (Purdue).
