DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois track & field team travels to Ypsilanti, Mich., this weekend, where they will compete in the 2013 Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships.

The meet begins Friday at 9:30 a.m. CT at Eastern Michigan's Bob Parks Track with the start of the multi-events, while Saturday's slate also gets underway at 9 a.m. with multis and the weight throw.

"We have a solid group of ladies traveling to the MAC indoor meet," said NIU head coach Connie Teaberry. "These ladies trained relentlessly to reach this opportunity and the staff is proud that they are representing NIU on this competitive stage. These athletes are capable of putting a lot of points on the board.  If they continue to believe in their ability, execute proper technique and compete leaving it all on the track, they will perform great. The showdown begins Friday, and they have to know they're ready."

The Huskies enter the conference meet with plenty of momentum after taking second at the Ball State Quadrangular. As a team, NIU scored 106 points to trail only Western Michigan, while outdistancing Miami (Ohio) and the host Cardinals. Janay Mitchell (60 meters), Megan Gregory (60 hurdles) and Meghan Heuer (mile) all earned event titles on the day. Meanwhile, Jenelle McCalla (60 hurdles), Mitchell (200 meters), Jamie Burr (mile), Leah Raffety (3000 meters), Ida Burbulla (high jump), Michaela Dwyer (high jump), Ellen Renk (triple jump), Sidra Sherrill (shot put) and the 4x400 relay all earned top five finishes.

NIU will encounter plenty of quality competition this weekend against their 11 MAC rivals. Kent State, the 2012 MAC indoor champion, enters the meet as the proverbial favorite with top-seeded athletes in seven events. Additionally, 2012 runner-up Toledo, Western Michigan and host Eastern Michigan should be prime contenders in the team title race.

For the Huskies, they will be represented with 12 different individuals and two relays. Highest among the NIU contingent are Mitchell, who is seeded second in the 60 meters and 13th in the 200 meters, and Gregory, who is seventh in the 60 hurdles and the 2012 champion in the event. Sidra Sherrill (10th - shot put), Jamie Burr (10th - 800 meters) and Ellen Renk (10th - triple jump) also rank in the top half in their respective events.
