Peoria, IL - After dropping their last two matches, the Northern Illinois University volleyball team got back on the winning track, as the Huskies swept Oakland, 30-21, 30-20, 30-21, in the opening match of the Radisson Hotel Invitational, hosted by Bradley University, at the Robertson Memorial Field House on Friday morning.
Junior middle blocker Kate McCullagh, who has led NIU in kills for every match this season, paced the Huskies' offensive attack with 13 kills. The Woodstock, Ill., native was equally as impressive at the net, posting eight total blocks (2 solo).
NIU sophomore outside hitter Amy Ward tallied a career-high, 10 kills, while setter Jenny Dziubla chipped in 35 assists on the morning to help the Huskies.
With the victory, NIU improves to 5-3 on the season, while the Grizzlies drop to 1-6 on the campaign.
Oakland struggled all morning, as the Grizzlies posted a hitting percentage of .044 (30 kills, 25 errors, 113 attacks) and committed 14 service errors.
Oakland's Whitney Lane and Adrienne Leone topped the Grizzlies with seven kills apiece.
NIU will be back in action later on Friday afternoon, as they will square off with Belmont at 4:30 p.m.
