PEORIA, IL - The Northern Illinois University volleyball team made short work of Southeast Missouri State as the Huskies swept the Red Hawks, 30-23, 30-21, 30-27, at the Radisson Hotel Invitational, hosted by Bradley University, at the Robertson Memorial Field House on Saturday afternoon.
NIU Head Coach Ray Gooden was pleased with his squad's performance against the Red Hawks after Friday night's tough four-game loss at the hands of Belmont.
"It was a good team win," Gooden said. "It was great to bounce back and pick up a win against a very similar team to Belmont.
"We were able to make plays and put ourselves in spots to be successful and gave ourselves a chance to score," Gooden continued. "We made a lot of good hustle plays and turned those into positive points."
With the victory, NIU improves to 6-4 on the campaign, while the Red Hawks drop to 2-7 on the season.
NIU junior middle blocker Kate McCullagh topped the Huskies with a match-high 14 kills, along with seven digs and four block assists. McCullagh's presence at the net helped the Huskies to nine total team blocks in three games.
Freshman middle hitter Joelle Beisel chipped in 10 kills, while teammate Laura Baetzel finished with a hitting percentage of .467 (7 kills, 0 errors, 15 attacks).
NIU junior libero Gina Guide tied her own team-season high for digs in a three-game set with a match-high 18. As a team, the Huskies tied a team-season high with 52 digs in a three-game match.
SE Missouri State was led offensively by Jessica Koeper's double-double of 14 kills and 11 digs. SEMO's Jill Miller added 11 kills in the defeat.
NIU will be back in action on Saturday night, as they will take on host Braves at 7:30 p.m.
