DeKalb, Ill. - The Northern Illinois (1-4, 0-0 Mid-American Conference) volleyball team opened up the Butler Invitational Friday afternoon at Indianapolis, Ind. with a loss to Utah Valley University (3-1 Independent), 27-30, 30-24, 30-21, 30-26.
The Huskies were able to take the first game from UVU, but couldn't sustain their attack throughout the remaining three games. Offensively, sophomore Meagan Schoenrock (Sylvania, Ind. / Northview) had a team-leading 15 kills. Junior Mandi Caputo (Chicago, Ill. / Immaculate Heart of Mary / DePaul) added a double-double with 47 assists and 10 digs. Freshman Maddie Hughes (St. Charles, Ill. / North) gathered 20 digs to lead NIU on the defensive end. Junior Jody Hardwick (Crystal Lake, Ill. / Crystal Lake South / St. Louis) added15 digs.
"We played very aggressively in the first game," said NIU head coach Ray Gooden. "We came back and made it a close game. We were able to pull it out and still stay aggressive. Unfortunately, we weren't able to maintain that high level of consistency in the other three games. They were able to turn points on us, which we would have liked to have done to them. We're trying to win those close plays so we can get over the hump. We're right there. We just have to do it."
UVU's attack was led by Camie Manwill and Jessica Endres. Manwill posted a double-double with 21 kills and 18 digs. Endres added 20kills for UVU. Kristi Lindley gathered 58 assists to lead UVU in passing. Defensively, Allyce Wilson gave UVU 25 digs.
Northern Illinois plays two matches on Saturday, September 1 to close out the Butler Invitational. The Huskies first match will be at 2 p.m. against Tennessee Tech University. The second match will be versus Butler University at 5 p.m. Both games will be available through Gametracker.
