Cedar Falls, Iowa - After losing the first two sets to Marquette (2-4), the Northern Illinois volleyball team rallied to win the third set and held the lead for most of the fourth set before coming up short in the Huskies' effort to force a fifth game against the Golden Eagles. The Huskies fall to 2-5 on the season as they dropped a 28-30, 21-25, 25-22, 23-25 decision to Marquette.

"I thought we had a better effort in this match," said NIU head coach Ray Gooden. "We lost the first two sets; the first in overtime. We put ourselves in that spot and we need to be able to win those sets. We were just a play or two short."

NIU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth set and held it throughout the set, increasing it to 18-13, but Marquette stormed back to tie it at 21-21. The teams then exchanged points before the Golden Eagles got a kill and took advantage of an NIU error to push the score in their favor, 24-22. Junior Meagan Schoenrock (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) notched a kill to pull the Huskies within one, but Marquette closed the match out with a kill on the next rally.

"We were up 18-13 and gave up a run again," said Gooden. "That is the achilles heel of us right now, giving up that negative run, and it happened at the wrong time unfortunately."

Schoenrock led the Huskies with 23 kills and earned a spot on the UNI All-Invite Team.

"Overall, I thought Meagan did a really good job scoring the ball," Gooden said. "She led us in points this weekend against Clemson and Marquette. All in all, she had a solid weekend."

Freshman Allison McGlaughlin (Morton, Ill./Morton) tallied 12 kills along with senior Irene Johnson's (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) 10. Junior Amanda Tadla (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn) totaled 46 assists and 11 digs for her first career double-double.

Sophomore Maddie Hughes (St. Charles, Ill./North) led the NIU defense with 19 digs.

NIU goes back on the road on Tuesday, September 9 to go up against Western Illinois (2-4) in Macomb, Ill. at 7 p.m. CST. Follow the match live on GameTracker via
