Corpus Christi, Texas - The Northern Illinois volleyball team went 2-1 on the weekend to finish second at the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Invitational, losing only their last match to San Diego State, 30-25, 30-27, 28-30, 30-26. The Huskies are now 5-6 on the year. With the win, SDSU improves to 7-2 in 2007.
Freshman Dani D'Ambrose (Addison Trail, Ill / Addison Trail) continues to set the pace for the Huskie offense, but against the Aztecs it wasn't enough. D'Ambrose totaled 22 kills to give her three consecutive matches with over 20 kills.
"We battled hard tonight," said Northern Illinois head coach Ray Gooden. "This was a learning experience for us and we will use this for the future."
The Huskies also had four players with double-digit digs. Freshman Maddie Hughes (St. Charles, Ill. / North) led the way with 28 digs. Junior Jody Hardwick (Crystal Lake, Ill. / Crystal Lake South / St. Louis) Monica Lang (Chicago, Ill. / Marist) also added 16 and 12 digs. Junior Mandi Caputo (Chicago, Ill. / Immaculate Heart of Mary / DePaul) notched a double-double with 46 assists and 22 digs.
The Aztec attack was led by Lauren Salisbury, who had 17 kills. Defensively, Aime Cordeiro posted 46 digs to help the Aztecs edge the Huskies.
Northern Illinois' next match is against Illinois-Chicago at 7 p.m. in Chicago, Ill. on Tuesday, September 11.
