MUNCIE, Ind. - The Northern Illinois volleyball team fell in its Mid-American Conference opener on Friday night, losing to Ball State, 25-13, 25-15, 25-16, at John E. Worthen Arena as the Cardinals (8-6, 1-0 MAC) out-killed the Huskies (6-8, 0-1 MAC) by a total of 42 to 25.
"We did not play our best volleyball tonight," said NIU head coach Ray Gooden.
The Cardinals were able to use long, extended runs in each set to leave the Huskies reeling all night. In the first set, BSU opened with a 10-4 run to help take the set. With the score tied 9-9 in the second frame, the Cardinals went on a 13-2 spurt to build an insurmountable 21-11 lead. BSU nearly repeated the feat in the final set by ending on a 17-8 run after the score was tied, 8-8.
Senior Meagan Schoenrock (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) led NIU with eight kills, while senior Cassie Yates (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) tallied seven kills, two blocks and a .357 attack percentage. Sophomore Kristin Hoffman (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) totaled 14 assists and junior Maddie Hughes (St. Charles, Ill./North) registered 12 digs.
