Athens, Ohio - Ohio freshman outside hitter Ellen Herman and junior middle blocker Melissa Griffin combined for 43 of OU's 75 kills as the #21 Bobcats upended Northern Illinois, 30-25, 30-32, 30-18, 30-26, snapping the Huskies' five-match winning streak in front of 1,464 people at the Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon.
Herman tallied a match-high 23 kills, while Griffin added 20 putaways, including a hitting percentage of .447 (20 kills, 3 errors, 38 attacks). Bobcat senior setter Savanah Parra (49 assists, 11 digs) and junior outside hitter Stephanie Blackburn (10 kills, 24 digs) each notched double-doubles. Sophomore middle blocker Amanda Andersen added 13 kills in the victory.
"It was a good match, but unfortunately we didn't play as consistently as we wanted to against a really good volleyball team," NIU head coach Ray Gooden said. "We played some good volleyball, but we got stuck in some unfortunate situations and Ohio took advantage of it."
With the victory, Ohio improves to 18-3 overall and 10-0 in MAC play, while the Huskies drop to 15-7 on the campaign and 8-2 in conference action.
NIU senior middle blocker Kate McCullagh (Woodstock, Ill.) posted a team-best 17 kills, followed by 14 kills from freshman outside hitter Meagan Schoenrock (Sylvania, Ohio) and 12 putaways from junior outside hitter Laura Baetzel (Chicago, Ill.).
The Huskies received double-doubles from both sophomore setter Mandi Caputo (Chicago, Ill.) and senior libero Gina Guide (Orland Park, Ill.). Caputo collected 25 assists and 19 digs, while Guide added 29 assists and 11 digs.
NIU is back in action on Friday, October 27, as the Huskies host Ball State for a 7 p.m. first serve at Victor E. Court.
