DEKALB, Ill. - Senior Justine Schepler was named the Most Important Player at the Northern Illinois University Volleyball banquet Saturday night, as the team closed the book on their 2013 season.

The honor is one of several team-voted awards given out at the banquet. For NIU head coach Ray Gooden, the banquet serves as an opportunity to thank everyone involved with the program.

"We like to use the banquet as a moment to give thanks for the year," he said. "On and off the court, there is a lot that goes into making this program as successful as it is. The banquet gives us that chance to thank all the people involved in the program."

A native of Sycamore, Ill., Schepler finished the 2013 season with a team-leading 547 digs and 4.45 digs/set, along with six service aces. In addition, she was named to Huskie Invitational's Tournament MVP and garnered Academic All-MAC laurels. Schepler finished her career with 1,249 digs, ranking her sixth in program history.

Garnering the Most Improved Award was Jenna Radtke, who earned a starting spot in NIU's lineup as a freshman and finished the year with 244 kills (1.98 kills/set) and 23 service aces. On defense, she led the Huskies with 27 solo blocks and 113 total blocks (0.92 blocks/set) en route to earning a spot on the MAC's All-Freshman Team.

The Academic Award was split between two players, as Schepler and Emily Paschke were both honored for their work in the classroom. Both individuals posted 4.0 GPAs in the spring and fall semester as accountancy majors.

Fellow senior Kayla Zeno earned the Salvani Spirit Award. The honor goes to the player the exemplifies the spirit of former NIU player Karen Salvani, who was known as a team player who loved to play the game - making the team experience an integral part of the Huskie volleyball program.

The team also honored those who earned individual honors during the season in tournament play or after the season from the Mid-American Conference
