DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University volleyball team has signed Chrystal McAlpin (Calumet Park, Ill./Shepard), head coach Ray Gooden announced Wednesday.
The addition of McAlpin brings the Huskies’ 2014 signing class to five players, as the team added four athletes in November.
“I think that she is an athletic talent and we feel that she has the potential to do things at levels that elite athletes can do,” Gooden said. “Though she is not very experienced, we think her ceiling is incredibly high. We’ve seen her work at different camps and saw her potential in those camps to think that she would be a good fit for our program.”
McAlpin finished her volleyball career at Shepard High School in Palos Heights, Ill., this past fall, where she helped lead the Lady Astros to a 20-12 record after leading the team in blocks and ranking near the top in kills. As a junior, McAlpin helped pace Shepard’s offense with 79 kills, in addition to 42 blocks on the defensive end. Along with volleyball, she is also a member of the school’s basketball and track & field teams.
McAlpin joins defensive specialist Anna Brereton (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie), setter Chandler Kinley (Lexington, Ky./Lafayette), outside hitter Taylor Krage (St. Charles, Ill./North) and middle blocker Shelby Seurer (Delano, Minn./Delano) as the NIU newcomers in 2014.
