NIU Women's Volleyball Downs Bowling Green State, 30-27, 30-23, 23-30, 30-24

Bowling Green, OH --- Northern Illinois University junior middle blocker Kate McCullagh (Woodstock) tallied a match-high, 19 kills, to reach her 1,000th career kill in a Huskie uniform and added 11 digs as NIU earned the 30-27, 30-23, 23-30, 30-24 Mid-American Conference victory over Bowling Green State University at Anderson Arena on Sunday (10/2) afternoon.

McCullagh becomes the 15th player in school history to reach 1,000 kills for her career, passing Carrie Prewitt (1979-82) for 14th in school history with 1,010 kills.

"That's a great milestone for Kate," NIU head coach Ray Gooden said. "She's made some pretty big strides in the past few years, so that's very cool."

Joining McCullagh in the Huskie cause was sophomore outside hitter Amy Ward (Sycamore) and senior middle blocker Corinne Walsh (Evergreen Park). For the fourth consecutive weekend, Ward notched a career-high with 17 kills, while Walsh added 12 putaways.

With the victory, NIU improves to 9-9 overall and 2-2 in Mid-American Conference action, while the host Falcons drop to 7-8 on the campaign and 1-3 in MAC action.

NIU was solid defensively as well, with four different players recording double-digit digs in the victory, led by a career-high 30 digs from senior defensive specialist Marie Zidek (Orland Park / Marian Catholic). Those 30 digs are the second most in school history for a four-game set.

"We had some great defensive play tonight that helped us score some points," Gooden said.

Bowling Green's Meghan Mohr topped the Falcons with 15 kills followed by Stephanie Swiger (11 kills) and Corrie Mills (10 kills).

"It was a huge win for us," Gooden said of the MAC road victory. "We're going to take it and run."

NIU will be back in action on Friday evening as the Huskies travel to Mount Pleasant, MI, to square off with Central Michigan University at 6 p.m. (CDT).
