DeKalb, Ill. - Collegiate Volleyball Update (www.cvu.com) announced on Tuesday that Northern Illinois senior libero Gina Guide (Orland Park, Ill.) has been named the cvu.com National Volleyball Player of the Week.
Guide, NIU's all-time leader in digs, helped propel the Huskies to a pair of road victories over both Toledo and Ball State, collecting 89 `ups' (11.12 dpg). On Monday, Guide was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week for her efforts.
"We are excited about what Gina accomplished last week, and we are thankful that cvu.com was able to recognize that as well," NIU head coach Ray Gooden said.
Guide's most impressive performance came in a four-game victory over the Rockets on Friday night, breaking her own NIU single-match record and tying the MAC record with 50 digs. Guide followed up that showing on Saturday against the Cardinals with 39 digs in a four-game win over Ball State, totaling two more digs than BSU's Amanda McCormick, the nation's leader in digs.
The Orland Park, Ill., native needs 24 more digs to reach 2,000 for her career. For the season, Guide has totaled 504 digs overall and 253 `ups' in conference action.
NIU is back in action on Friday, as they travel to Ohio to square off with Kent State for a 6 p.m. (CST) first serve.
