NIU Corinne Walsh Named MAC West Division Volleyball Player of the Week

DeKalb, IL – With a home playoff match on the line, Northern Illinois University senior middle blocker Corinne Walsh (Evergreen Park) put all concerns to rest as the Evergreen Park native helped the Huskies to a Mid-American Conference road sweep of the University of Akron and the University at Buffalo last week with a total of 40 kills and a hitting percentage of .493 (40 kills, 6 errors, 69 attacks) to lock up the No. 8 seed for NIU in the upcoming MAC Tournament.

For her efforts, the Mid-Am Commissioner Rich Chrysta announced Monday (Nov. 14) that Walsh was named the West Division Volleyball Player of the Week for the period ending November 13th.

“Corinne had a great weekend,” NIU head coach Ray Gooden said. “She played a critical role for our team to be successful in those two matches.

“It’s awesome to see how she has stepped up this past weekend and has been for the past few weeks.”

Those two triumphs extended the Huskies’ winning streak to three matches and secures a MAC First-Round Tournament Match against the University of Akron at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night at Victor E. Court in NIU’s Convocation Center. NIU is currently 15-16 on the campaign.

Walsh’s most impressive performance of the week came in a four-game victory over Buffalo with a match-high 20 kills, while hitting at a .515 clip (20 kills, 3 errors, 33 attacks). For the season, Walsh is averaging 2.58 kills-per-game with an overall hitting percentage of .250.

Bowling Green setter Chrissy Gothke was named the East Division Player of the Week after helping the Falcons to a pair of victories, averaging 3.1 kills, 12.6 assists and five digs per game in three contests.
