Tips for running in the heat

Head cross country coach Greg Hipp gives tips on running in the summer heat

The 2014 season will be Greg Hipp's fourth at the helm of Northern Illinois' cross country program.

Over the last year, NIU cross country, middle and long distance runners have already broken nine NIU all-time records.On the track the middle and long distance event group recorded their highest point totals in seven years at the MAC Championships indoors and outdoors.

Through Hipp's career his teams have won seven NCAA Division-I conference team championships while his middle and long distance runners have individually accumulated 119 All-Conference honors, 31 individual conference championship titles, been runner-ups 24 times and have placed third 31 times. With eight NCAA All-Region and two NCAA All-America track honors, Hipp's runners have compiled 21 NCAA First-Round/Regional and 15 NCAA National Championship qualifying performances from the 800-meter to the 10,000-meter events and cross country. Additionally three of Hipp's runners have qualified for the USA National Championships with five athletes earning USA Junior National Championship qualifiers.

Hipp came to NIU after spending seven years as the head coach at Missouri State. Hipp has been a member of the USA Track and Field Cross Country Running Council since 2003 and also served on the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's Cross Country Executive Committee as the Midwest Region Coaches Representative since 2006. After joining the Missouri State staff as a cross country and track and field assistant coach in 2003, Hipp was elevated to head cross country coach in 2004. In his first season as head coach, the Bears won the Missouri Valley Conference championship and Hipp was named MVC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year. In his seven seasons as head coach, the Missouri State women's cross country team finished in the top-three of the MVC six times. In his time at Missouri State, the Bears also won five Missouri Valley Conference championships and student-athletes coached by Hipp have broken every school record in cross country as well as every track and field mark between 1,500 and 10,000 meters. During his coaching career, Hipp has helped 118 student-athletes earn all-conference honors, including 31 individual conference champions. He has guided athletes to 15 NCAA national qualifying performances and eight NCAA Cross Country All-Region honors.

Hipp competed collegiately at Appalachian State University where, as a member of the cross country and track and field teams, he was a member of six Southern Conference championship teams. He began his coaching career at Appalachian State in 2002, helping the men's and women's cross country programs earn Southern Conference championships before moving on to Missouri State. He received his bachelor's degree in journalism from Appalachian State in 2002 and earned his master's in physical education from Missouri State in 2004.
