Courtney Oldenburg and Nancy Nieto finished among the top-25 racers Friday, as they led Northern Illinois women's cross country team to a sixth-place finish at the Illinois Intercollegiate in Normal, Ill.. The Huskies battled racers from seven Division I schools, to finish sixth of seventh in the Illinois Intercollegiate Division I races.
Northern Illinois finished the race in sixth place with 155 points, beating Western Illinois, 157, who placed seventh. The Illinois State women's cross country team placed first at the competition with 23 points, while Loyola placed second with 60 points, and Illinois finished in third place with 88 points. UIC (109) and Eastern Illinois (118) rounded out the top-five finishers.
"We beat Western Illinois, and we haven't beaten them all year," assistant coach Mark McConeghey said. "I am a little disappointed at our times, but I am not discouraged. We need to learn to be a little more aggressive next week."
Oldenburg (West Salem, Wis./West Salem) led the Huskies with a 17th-place finish with a time of 18:38. Oldenburg's time ties the Alicja Czajka (2002) and Brianne Peterson (1998) for the eleventh-fastest five-kilometer time in NIU history.
Placing second for the Huskies was Nieto (Elgin, Ill./Streamwood/Missouri State), who recorded a time of 19:05 to finish 24th overall.
Sunsea Shaw (South Bend, Ind./Riley High School) and Breanna Brevitt (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) were the third and fourth place finishers for the Huskies. Shaw finished the race in a time of 19:26, taking 33rd, while Brevitt ran the race in a time of 19:59, placing 42nd overall.
The Huskies will continue competition on the road as they travel to St. Paul, Minn. to compete in the Roy Griak Invitational, Sept. 26.
