South Bend, Ind. - The Northern Illinois women's cross country squad found themselves among some pretty stiff competition at the 51st Annual Notre Dame Invitational, held at the nine-hole Notre Dame Golf Course on Friday afternoon.

Northern Illinois may have not scored the best as the Huskies finished 19th overall in the 24-team field in the Gold Division, but for the third-consecutive week, NIU showed an improvement in each of their times.

"There was some really good competition today," Northern Illinois Assistant Coach Mark McConeghey said. "We did really well and everyone improved from last week. We continue to see this improvement every week and that's the big thing."

Indiana State won the overall title with 123 points, followed by IPFW (129), Calvin College (130), Akron (158), Ball State (161), San Jose State (164), Santa Clara (168), Miami (192), Windsor Academy (194), United States Military Academy (288),Tulane (294), Oakland (310), Cincinnati (315), Anderson (320), UW-Oshkosh (363), Gonzaga (408), Hillsdale (426), DePaul (466), Northern Illinois (470), IUPUI (574), UW-Green Bay (636), Arkansas State (641), Youngstown State (663) and South Alabama (721).

Windsor Academy's Jackie Malette won the Gold Division race with a time of 17:33.

NIU Sophomore Meghan Ginter (Aurora, Ill.) placed 69th overall with a time of 19:15, giving her the top Huskie time for the fourth race this season. Ginter was followed by junior Mia Supanich-Winter (Libertyville, Ill.), who was six seconds behind her with a 77th-place mark of 19:21.

Senior Jessica Schauff (Dixon, Ill.) finished 105th with a mark of 19:45. Sophomore Ashley Rittenbacher (New Lenox, Ill.) placed 119th, crossing the finish line in 19:57, while teammate Denisse Valladares (Mount Prospect, Ill.) was close behind with a 122nd-place finish of 19:59

 

 

Northern Illinois will be back in action on October 6, as they travel to Lisle, Ill., seeking their fifth consecutive Benedictine Eagle Invitational title.
