DEKALB, Ill. -
The Northern Illinois women's cross country team will hit the road this weekend as they travel to Normal, Ill. to compete in the Illinois Intercollegiate hosted by Illinois State, Friday. The Huskies will face racers from 33 teams from across Illinois in a five-kilometer race that is set to begin at 5 p.m.
"Every week I expect improvement," assistant coach Mark McConeghey said. "We are going to be racing several of the teams we faced last weekend, so what I want to see is the girls get closer to, or beating, some of the girls on the other teams that they may not have beaten in the past."
At the 2008 Illinois Intercollegiate, Sunsea Shaw (South Bend, Ind./Riley High School), Breanna Brevitt (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) and Jessica Troike (Tuscola, Ill./Tuscola) were among the top finishers for NIU, leading the Huskies to ninth-place finish at the competition.
"We were ninth last year, and I'd like us to be finish higher this year," said McConeghey. "I'd like to see us finish in the top five. And I think it's a realistic goal if we run well."
This weekend's race follows a fourth-place finish by NIU, at the second-annual Huskie Open on Sept. 12. Courtney Oldenburg (West Salem, Wis./West Salem) was the top finisher for the Huskies, finishing the race in an eighth-place time of 19:27.53.
Nancy Nieto (Elgin, Ill./Streamwood/Missouri State), Shaw, Brevitt, and Jackie Sciacero (Sterling, Ill./Sterling/Sauk Valley C.C.) were among the top finishers for the Huskies in last weekend's competition.
