Roy Griak Invitational Meet Central

DeKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois cross country team makes its furthest trip of the regular season this weekend when they head to Minnesota for the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational.

The meet begins at 9 a.m. at UM’s Lee Bolstad Golf Course with the Gold Race – the event in which the Huskies will run – beginning at approximately 1:10 p.m.

“This Saturday is a great opportunity for our young team to be introduced to the demands and pressures of a national-level competition,” said NIU Head Coach Greg Hipp. “It’s important that we gain that experience now, as this race will test how well we can compete and keep our competitive focus in such a large field of runners.”

NIU gets back on the course after having last weekend off. Two weeks ago at the Illinois State Invitational, the Huskies took fourth place. Ali Olson paced the team with a 16th place finish with a time of 18:19.24. Meanwhile, junior Jamie Burr clocked in at 18:37.33 to claim 23rd and Leah Raffety just missed out on the top 25 with a 18:39.72 clip to take 26th.

Saturday, the Huskies will take on some of the nation’s best programs in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Highlighting the field will be seven teams currently ranked in the national Top 30 – including #5 Arizona, #12 Michigan State, #19 Minnesota and #30 Vanderbilt – and the top two teams in the Division II polls in Grand Valley State and Adams State. Additionally, three other programs receiving votes in the Division I poll will be in the field.
