DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois women's cross country team will look to wrap-up its regular season Saturday at the 2009 NCAA Midwest Region Cross Country Championships hosted by Missouri State. The Huskies will compete in a six-kilometer race that is set to begin at 11 a.m. in Springfield, Mo.

NIU will face competition from 33 Division I cross country teams from Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

"I think it'll be a great performance," said assistant cross country coach Mark McConeghey. "I think the girls will do very well at the race. The MAC championships built our confidence, and I think that will help us this weekend."

The Huskies enter this weekend's competition after finishing eighth at the Mid-American Conference Championships, NIU's second-best finish in school history. Courtney Oldenburg (West Salem, Wis./West Salem) and Nancy Nieto (Elgin, Ill./Streamwood/Missouri State) led the Huskies at the championship, finishing first and second for the Huskies respectively.

Sunsea Shaw (South Bend, Ind./Riley High School), Nany Maritim (Kericho, Kenya/AIC Litein), and Breanna Brevitt (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) rounded out the top-five performers for the Huskies at the championships.

"We are not going to NCAA championships, so this race gives us an opportunity to come out and run the race differently than we usually would," said McConeghey. "The girls have the opportunity to learn how well they can race against tough competition, and I expect that the girls come out and compete really hard this weekend."
