Greg Herring Named NIU Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing

DEKALB, Ill. -- Greg Herring, a collegiate sports marketer with over a decade of experience, has been named Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing at Northern Illinois University, NIU Associate Vice-President and Director of Athletics Jeff Compher announced on Friday.

“Not only does Greg have a lot of experience, but he is also a Midwest guy,” said Compher. “He has worked throughout the country at schools and athletic programs our size and has increased attendance and enhanced the marketing efforts for those programs.

“He is also the incoming President of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators, so it is a real honor to have him on our staff,” Compher continued. “We are excited to have him here and we look forward to him meeting and interacting with our donors, our season ticketholders and our entire fan base.” 

Herring comes to NIU from York College of Pennsylvania where he served as a sports management visiting instructor, creating and instructing a curriculum on ticket operations, sales and negotiations.

“I would like to thank Jeff Compher and (Associate Athletic Director) Shelley Binegar for this opportunity,” said Herring. “I am very excited to return to the FBS level and become a part of the NIU family. I look forward to doing my part to continue to build upon the success that the NIU Athletic Department has had under Mr. Compher’s leadership.”

Prior to his time at York College, Herring worked as the Assistant Athletic Director for External Affairs at Radford University. During Herring’s tenure at Radford, the Highlander men’s basketball program more than doubled its season ticket sales while volleyball, men’s soccer, softball and women’s basketball also saw attendance increase by double-digit percentages. Herring also established the department’s sponsorship program and was appointed as the University Brand and Graphic Standards Manager by the Radford University President. Herring also served as the sport administrator for four Highlander teams.

Before joining the staff at Radford, Herring spent five years at Southern Mississippi, the last two as the Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Sales. While at Southern Miss, Herring oversaw season ticket sales increases in football, men’s basketball and baseball. He also improved student football attendance to over 7,000 per game and was responsible for the launch of Southern Mississippi’s new mascot

A graduate of Miami University, Herring began his career in collegiate athletics at the University of Missouri where he was the Assistant Director of Sports Marketing and Promotions for two years.

Herring is also the incoming President of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA), having served on the NACMA Board of Directors since 2007.

Herring began his duties at NIU on July 9.
