The Huskies are looking to upset another Big Ten opponent Saturday.

Northern Illinois takes on Illinois in an intra-state clash this Saturday at 11 a.m.  The Huskies (1-1) are coming off a 23-17 victory over North Dakota in their lone September home game of 2010, while Illinois defeated Southern Illinois at home last Saturday.

It is just the fourth meeting ever between the teams, with Illinois winning all three previous contests. In the last game, played Sept. 8, 2001, Northern Illinois took a 6-3 lead over the Illini into the fourth quarter before UI quarterback Kurt Kittner hit a pair of touchdown passes and Northern Illinois ran out of time as Illinois triumphed 17-12.

Between 2000-2009, Northern Illinois won more games than any other Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) team in the state as the Huskies went 68-53, compared to Northwestern's 61-61 mark and Illinois' 10-year total of 45-73.

Saturday's game is the first of two straight Big Ten Network appearances for the Huskies this season. The Big Ten Network is airing four games at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday and offers all of the games to its cable partners, giving them the ability to offer their customers the games on "Extra Football Game Channels."  Cable systems assign different channel numbers in every market.  You can determine the channel number for the games in your area by using the GameFinder application on  Click here to go to GameFinder.  If the Northern Illinois-Illinois game is not listed, contact your provider.

It's hard to believe that head volleyball coach Ray Gooden and his staff will have Lauren Wicinski as their starting outside hitter for three more seasons after the 2010 campaign wraps up.  Wicinski's presence in the front row has been key in helping the Huskies race out to an 11-1 start this season.

Jeremy Werner of visited volleyball practice earlier this week, and caught up with the "Wiz Kid" to document the beginning of her freshman campaign.  Don't miss the Huskies at the "Dog House" that is Victor E. Court this weekend; NIU hosts Youngstown State Saturday 1 p.m., and takes on Iowa Sunday at 3 p.m.

Huskie fans, we apologize that the new "Huskie Happenings" blog hasn't been rolled out yet.  We're having some technical issues on the front end, and hope to have them solved today.  As a quick glimpse, the template will be very similar to what is included on Washington's website

There are a pair of stories on Saturday's NIU-Illinois game in the Daily Herald. Lindsey Willhite came out to practice yesterday and talked to both Huskie coordinators about the upcoming contest with the Illini and filed this report. Willhite also caught up with former Illinois and current NIU kicker Michael Cklamovski and posted this story on his blog. There was also an AP story talking about how much the Illinois head coach Ron Zook and Illini players respect NIU.

Rick Armstrong of the Aurora Beacon News was at yesterdy's press conference and turned in this story on the contingecy plans in place if NIU head coach Jerry Kill can't make the game.

It'll be a rowdy one tonight at Victor E. Court. The undefeated Huskies and unbeaten Wisconsin square off in a non-conference showdown tonight at 7:30 p.m., in a week where NIU athletic teams will be no stranger to taking on foes from the Big Ten.  After tonight's match against the Badgers, the football team travels to Champaign to take on Illinois Saturday, followed by the volleyballers hosting Iowa at Victor E. The Northern Illinois University rushing attack was the main topic of discussion after the Huskies' 23-17 victory over North Dakota in the home opener Saturday night. The Chicago Tribune's Fred Mitchell recounted the career rushing day turned in by Chandler Harnish in his recap, while Lacy Banks of the Sun-Times talked up the NIU defense in his story.
