Scholar Athletes of the Week (September 16 to September 22)

DeKALB, Ill. - Each week, NIU honors two student-athletes that exemplify the concept of the "student-athlete" supremely well. These students excel both in the classroom and on the playing field. This week, the honorees football's Luke Eakes and women's golf's Taylor Ellett.

Week's Achievements: NIU tight end Luke Eakes had two receptions in the Huskies' win against Eastern Illinois on Saturday. His two catches went for 24 total yards, each having significance in the game. The first came mid-way through the second quarter. Eakes pulled down a Jordan Lynch pass for a three-yard touchdown reception, which tied the game at 20-20 at the time. Toward the end of the game, as the Huskies were trying to run out the clock, Eakes caught a 21-yard pass for a first down, allowing NIU to safely take a knee and end the game. Eakes was also a key part of the Huskies' rushing attach that resulted in two players going over the 100-yard mark. NIU had 367 rushing yards overall. Week's Achievements: NIU women's golfer Taylor Ellett competed in the Cougar Classic that ran on September 16 and 17, which was held at the Harborside International Golf Center in Chicago, Ill. Ellett had a top-20 finish, compiling a two-round score total of 157. Ellett played this one as an individual, and with her efforts, she claimed 19th place out of a field of 77. Her best score of the event came in the first round, when she shot a 77.
