Button your shirt, Joe Buonavolanto, this isn't 1976.

Northern Illinois could not hold on to a 6-5 lead in the seventh inning that was established by Jordin Hood's second home run of the game, as Milwaukee rallied for two runs in the eighth to claim a 7-6 win on Tuesday night at Road Ranger Stadium, home of the Frontier League's Rockford RiverHawks.  It was NIU baseball's first-ever game in the Rockford, Ill., area and the three-year-old stadium's first Division I contest.

Read the NIUHuskies.com recap here, and read the recaps of both the DeKalb Daily Chronicle and Rockford Register Star, who each were on hand for the event.

DETAILS ON THE SIMON SIGNING

As originally reported right here on Huskie Happenings, former Northern Illinois receiver Matt Simon, who took part in the New Orleans' Saints rookie mini-camp this past weekend in New Orleans on a tryout basis, has signed a free agent contract with the team, the Saints' announced Monday. Simon joins fellow 2008 seniors Larry English, the defensive end who became the highest draft choice in NIU history when the San Diego Chargers selected him with the 16th overall pick in the first round, and wide receiver Britt Davis, a free agent pick-up by the New York Jets, as rookies on 2009 NFL rosters. Get details from NIUHuskies.com of the Farmington Independent, Simon's hometown paper.

SPRING FOOTBALL REVIEW: THE DEFENSIVE BACKS

The DeKalb Daily Chronicle's John Sahly wrapped up his "Spring Review" with a look at NIU's defensive backs.  Within the blog, check out Sahly's video interview with Patrick George, whom he tabs as the Most Improved Player in the defensive backfield.  As a bonus, he threw in an extended look at the punters and kickers.

Speaking of football, check out ESPN.com's Mid-American Conference Football Spring wrap-up.  There are some interesting nuggets surrounding NIU quarterback Chandler Harnish, along with the Huskies' defense, which led the league last season.
