2008-09 WRAP - DAY TWO
Yesterday we started a three-week long venture into recapping the 2008-09 season, one team at a time. Also, stay tuned for a more detailed version of the year-in-review in the Annual Report, which will be completed and posted on NIUHuskies.com later this summer.
The Huskies highlighted the 2008 cross country season by etching a pair of times in the school record book. Both times came at the right time: MAC Championships. On that day, Sunsea Shaw put up an 18:47, the 21st-best time in school history, to finish as the top Huskie. Just behind her, Breanna Brevitt posted a 19:02, which ranks 37th on the list of NIU's fastest 5k times.
The best news about marking two more top times in 2008, is that both Sunsea and Breanna will be only juniors in 2009. Two more years of great talent, and a growing group around them means the Huskie cross country program is on the way up!
Academically, the team is already near the top. Three Huskies were placed on the MAC All-Academic Team, as Breanna, along with seniors Meghan Ginter and Denisse Valladares all earned honorable mention status.
The Huskies will head into 2009 with Sunsea and Breanna leading the way, and will enjoy the addition of Nancy Nieto, who transferred to NIU in January. Nancy quickly became a school record holder when she ran 10:16.05 in the 3,000-meter in the second meet of the year.
JORD-IN THE HOOD
For the second time this year, Jordin Hood was named MAC Player of the Week. The numbers for his week break down like this: he hit .421 (8-for-19) with five runs, eight hits, 11 RBI, three homeruns, a walk, a steal, a .476 on-base percentage and a .895 slugging percentage. To say this kid is a legit player is to short him. He hit two jacks for five RBI in a midweek game against Milwaukee, and blasted another shot against Western Michigan later in the week. The best part about him? He's a junior.
MARK YOUR SCHEDULE...
For volleyball in 2009. Ray Gooden (aka DJ Ray) announced his team's 09 card today. As is often the case, the Huskies serve up the NIU Invitational to start the season, August 28-29. The 2009 edition is chalk full of in-state rivals, including Western Illinois, Southern Illinois and Illinois-Chicago. Read this for a more in-depth look at the 2009 schedule, or check it out for yourself.
