Former Huskie wide receiver Matt Simon, who was signed as a free agent by the New Orleans Saints last spring and released September 15, 2009, is back on the roster of the World Champs. Simon signed with the Saints February 12, 2010. He was back on campus recently and NIU head coach Jerry Kill had Simon speak to the Huskies about among other things the leadership of quarterback Drew Brees.

We've got a great business man's special brewing out at the Huskie Tennis Courts today. The men's tennis team, winners in five-of its last six matches, will host Lewis University OUTSIDE today at 3 p.m. First-year Patrick Fisher's team is young, athletic and improving every time out. Come enjoy some sun and solid tennis in the "official" home opener. The Huskie have played four matches indoors in Rockford, but today marks the first time the team can compete outside.
Also, don't forget to track the baseball team at Southern Illinois, and the Huskie softball squad at the USF Tournament in Tampa, Fla., this afternoon. The women's tennis team also goes for seven-straight wins Saturday at SIU, while the gymnastics team begins competition in the annual state meet in Bloomington, Ill.
HUMANITARIAN BOWL ON HORIZON FOR MAC

It isn't exactly breaking news that the Mid-American Conference and the Humanitarian Bowl were in discussions, but MAC officials confirmed with John Sahly of the DeKalb Daily Chronicle/HuskieWire.com earlier this week that the Roady's Humanitarian Bowl will be the next bowl tie-in for the league. It will eventually replace the International Bowl, which NIU played in last season.

It's hard to believe, but NIU football's spring practice is set to begin Tuesday, March 23. NIU head football coach Jerry Kill joins Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Jeff Compher and Andy Garcia for the latest edition of "NIU Live" tonight. CONVO HOSTS IHSA CLASS 3A SUPERSECTIONAL TONIGHT!

The Convocation Center will be rocking tonight as the Peoria Richwoods Knights (28-2) and the Oswego Panthers (24-6) square off in the IHSA Class 3A DeKalb Supersectional at 7:30 p.m.
Oswego, led by 6-foot-4 senior Andrew Ziemnik (17.9 ppg, 11.6 rpg), is seeking its second straight supersectional crown after a second-place finish at the state finals last year.
Top-ranked Richwoods, led by seniors Tylon Deal (12 ppg, 4 rpg, 2.9 apg) and Tony Frazier (10.4 ppg, 5.1 rpg), looks to return home for Friday's state semifinal at Carver Arena.
The winner of tonight's matchup will advance to play either St. Viator or Marshall, who square off in the Hoffman Estates Supersectional tonight at 7:30 p.m.
HUSKIE SIGNEE NAMED PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Northern Illinois women's basketball signee Jenna Thorp was named the DeKalb Daily Chronicle Girls Basketball Player of the Year, the paper announced today. Thorp led Hinckley-Big Rock to back-to-back 2A state titles in her junior and senior seasons, and will be a welcome addition to the Huskies this fall.

Selection Monday, the women's basketball equivalent of Selection Sunday, has come and gone, and left a boatload of 2009-10 NIU opponents in the postseason. Four teams made the Big Dance (Bracket): 11-seed DePaul takes on Vanderbilt in the opening round, MAC Champion Bowling Green, a 12 seed, takes on Michigan State, and NIU opponents Northern Iowa and Nebraska will meet in the first round in a 16-1 match-up.
In addition, three MAC teams (Toledo, Eastern Michigan, Kent State) and recent opponent Illinois State are in the Women's NIT (Bracket). Add to that Akron playing in the inaugural Women's Basketball Invitational, and there are nine 2009-10 NIU oppenents in the postseason.

Selection Sunday wasn't kind to NCAA Division I men's basketball teams from the state of Illinois. All 13 teams (Bradley, Chicago State, Eastern Illinois, Illinois, Illinois-Chicago, Illinois State, Loyola-Chicago, Northwestern, Southern Illinois, SIU-Edwardsville, Western Illinois and NIU) were left out of the field. That being said, four of NIU's 2009-10 opponents will be playing in this week's NCAA Tournament; three will compete in the NIT, and another has earned a bid to the College Basketball Invitational (CBI). NetScouts, an International scouting service, released its All-Mid-American Conference men's basketball teams Monday, and Northern Illinois was well-represented. Xavier Silas, after chalking up Honorable Mention All-MAC honors last week, was named first-team; while Darion "Jake" Anderson collected second-team honors. The article also recoginzed a Most Valuable Player and International Player of the Year.

Mark your calendar for a full day of Huskie fun on Saturday, April 24! The NIU Spring Football Game, Tailgate Showdown, Grad Bash and TUGS finale will all take place surrounding the mecca of Northern Illinois football, Huskie Stadium. The Tailgate Showdown, a straight-up good ol' fashioned cook-off, starts at 11 a.m. As always, we need cooks! Get a look at last year's TGSD with the video blog from the event:
Also starting at 11 a.m. are the fifth and seventh-place matches for TUGS, the annual tug-of-war event. At 1 p.m. it's the final spring football practice of 2010 at Huskie Stadium. You can catch a preview of the 2010 Huskies, and enjoy concessions and refreshments provided by Goose Island. The day continues with the TUGS Championship following the game, and concludes with the Grad Bash featuring cover band "Mike & Joe" just east of the stadium. Get your complete rundown with the day's events. It's a lot to take in, so make a pacing plan, and stick to it.
