AN UPDATE FROM CHINA

By Brett McWethy | Posted at 5:52 pm on Saturday, May 15, 2010

Xavier Silas and Sean Kowal, Northern Illinois' two members of the touring team "Reach USA," have touched down in China with their teammates.  Below is a blog entry by Robby Spear, the co-founder of the organization.  Stay tuned to NIUHuskies.com for all the details of the two-week trip.

We are getting ready to head out to see the Great Wall of China.  The Red Team, the group that is getting ready to head back home on Monday, had a great time of a final day of shopping and heading over to one of the universities for an afternoon of pickup basketball. They amazed the crowds with a little dunking and playing but more important was just a great time of getting to know more students.

The Blue team, which is just beginning the trip, has all arrived.  Coming in three different waves, the final arrival was late on Saturday night.  Coach Gates had his plane delayed from Reno and missed the connection so had to be rerouted but finally made it in.  The other guys have already hit the ground and are enjoying the area.  After having the first big Chinese dinner, they experienced the shampoo!  45 minutes of shampooing hair and massage of head, back, face, and arms for a big price of under $3.  Several asked if they would be able to do this again.  Yep, they are adjusting well.

MOVIN' ON!

By Brett McWethy | Posted at 11:44 am on Friday, May 14, 2010

Hot off the press, the Northern Illinois softball team just completed a 1-0 shutout over Ohio in its third game of the Mid-American Conference Tournament at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio.  The Huskies will now take on the Miami (Ohio)-Central Michigan winner tonight beginning at 6:30 p.m.  NIU has defeated Miami, the defending MAC Tournament champion, three times this season.  The Huskies and Chippewas had their two-game series canceled due to inclement weather, during the regular season.

By Brett McWethy | Posted at 11:47 am on Thursday, May 13, 2010

Graham Watson has been blogging about 2010 bowl predictions, and today, took a stab at prognosticating the Mid-American Conference bowl teams for the upcoming campaign.  Not only does Watson tab the Huskies as the favorites in the MAC-West; she also says that NIU could be a darkhorse to win the league outright.

ONTO THE WINNER'S BRACKET!

By Brett McWethy | Posted at 9:11 am on Thursday, May 13, 2010

The Northern Illinois softball team had to wait until late into the night to play its first-round contest at the Mid-American Conference Tournament, but when they did so, the Huskies wasted no time getting rolling.  Freshman catcher Adriana Sanchez hit two home runs, including a first-inning grand slam that keyed a five-run frame, as NIU held off defending MAC Tournament champion Miami (Ohio), 6-5.  Next up: the sixth-seeded Huskies will take on No. 2 seed Ball State TODAY beginning at 4 p.m. CST.  Follow all of the action RIGHT HERE.

There is still time to head up to Miller Park today to catch the Huskies. NIU takes on Milwaukee immediately following the game between the Brewers and the Braves. Tickets for the Big League game can be purchased at the door, and the word is if you arrive at the park after that game, you should be able to get into the NIU game for free.

Chouinard and the Huskies swept Miami in the final home series of the season.

By Brett McWethy | Posted at 10:19 am on Tuesday, May 11, 2010

The Northern Illinois softball team has qualified for the Mid-American Conference Tournament for the second-consecutive season under head coach Lindsay Chouinard, and will begin its postseason run Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. (CST) versus defending champion Miami (Ohio) in the first-round.  The tournament is a double-elimination format, but the shaky weather forecast (hey, its May in the Midwest; get over it) could change that.  Stay tuned to NIUHuskies.com and MAC Softball Tournament Central for complete details.  The Huskies were one of the final four teams alive in the field last year, and accomplished some great things during the regular season!

Luzzi Jury Duty

From the "It's Funny When It Happens to Some One Else" file, NIU head men's soccer coach Eric Luzzi had jury duty this morning. He showed up just as I was posting this, saying the case he was on is not going to a jury trial, so he's out of luck. Known for a fondness for civic engagement, Luzzi actually said he wants to do jury duty at some point, but he's flying to Hawaii with his wife tomorrow for a vacation, so not this time.
