LENDING A HELPING HAND

By Joe Summins | Posted at 4:05 pm on Friday, July 16, 2010

NIU football players Chandler Harnish and Jake Coffman help unload items for the University Women's Club, which is participating in Sycamore's Treasures from the Attic, a citywide yard sale running July 15-17. Profits from the University Women's Club's yard sale fund scholarships for local women.

BARKER TRAVELS TO UGANDA, AFRICA

By Megan Wallace | Posted at 11:43 am on Friday, July 16, 2010

This summer Carrie Barker had the unique opportunity to travel to Uganda, Africa to help train 180 African soccer coaches in hopes of improving the lives of individuals on a global scale through the game of soccer. Barker, who enters her third season as the NIU women's soccer head coach, joined six other coaches from across the U.S. in an effort to help the African coaches obtain their U.S. Soccer E-Licenses and International Sport Connection (ISC) coach certifications. Jake Dugger, of the Daily Chronicle and HuskieWire.com, catches up with Barker in this piece about her Trip of a Lifetime.

THE TRAP IS SET

By Joe Summins | Posted at 8:50 am on Friday, July 16, 2010

Much has been made about the Huskies' challenging non-conference slate, playing three of their first four games at BCS-schools. The final two of that stretch will be played at Illinois (Sept. 18) and at Minnesota (Sept. 25). Adam Rittenberg of ESPN.com has selected both games as the No. 7 and No. 6 trap games in the Big Ten this fall respectively.

IT'S FERRELL'S WORLD, AND WE'RE LIVING IN IT

By Brett McWethy | Posted at 2:26 pm on Thursday, July 15, 2010

Head women's tennis coach Ryun Ferrell has plenty of pep in his step, and that might be an understatement.  I got the opportunity to check out some of his High School camp today, and the energy was high.  There was a lot of tennis, along with some team spirit contests, and coach Ferrell singing along to the country and 80's music that was blaring from the press box at Ralph McKinzie Field.  Click Here to view a photo gallery.

Kathryn Friedlund, a senior-to-be on Ferrell's team, was volunteering as an instructor at the camp, and told me about her summer activities.  She is currently interning at Comcast Sports Net in Chicago (at the Tribune building) as a Marketing "Street Teamer," and also working as a waitress at Eduardo's in downtown DeKalb.  If you haven't already, do Ferrell and company a favor and "like" them on the women's tennis team's Facebook page

SAHLY AND "MIKE P" CATCH UP ON HUSKIEWIRE

By Brett McWethy | Posted at 11:55 am on Thursday, July 15, 2010

John Sahly, Sports Editor of the DeKalb Daily Chronicle and HuskieWire.com guru, is plenty busy right now.  But he took some time out Wednesday to catch up with Northern Illinois guard Michael Patton, who enters his senior season in 2010-11.  As "Mike P" reveals in the Q&A, he and his teammates are working together to leave it all out on the floor in the upcoming campaign.

ORLANDO-SENTINEL TABS HUSKIES TOP-50 TEAM

By Brett McWethy | Posted at 11:50 am on Thursday, July 15, 2010

The Northern Illinois football team continues to garner plenty of preseason love from various media outlets across the country and according to the Orlando-Sentinel, the Huskies are ranked No. 49 in the FBS heading into the 2010 season.  This isn't breaking news, but according to the publication, what will carry the Huskies this season will be the strength and depth of their defense.

TURNER FEATURED IN CHICAGO SUN-TIMES

Remember this game, Huskie fans??

By Brett McWethy | Posted at 11:43 am on Thursday, July 15, 2010

Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times caught up with former Northern Illinois running back Michael Turner earlier this week, and the theme was PATIENCE.  Michael is one of six boys in the family, many of who played college football.  But he was the only one to reach the NFL, taking full advantage of his only Division I scholarship offer, from former Huskie head coach Joe Novak

GIVING BACK TO AREA YOUTH

By Joe Summins | Posted at 4:44 pm on Wednesday, July 14, 2010

Members of the Northern Illinois University football team have been giving their time the last few nights working with youngsters of the newly-created DeKalb Youth Football League. The Huskies have been working with the group through a series of summer camps which are being held at DeKalb High School. It just another example of the Huskies giving back to the community.

By Zach Peters | Posted at 2:58 pm on Wednesday, July 14, 2010

This afternoon marked the final session of Huskie volleyball's summer camps, concluding with the College Intensity Camp that started Sunday.  The Huskies have been working out all summer and helping campers learn what Huskie volleyball is all about.  With August peaking around the corner, preseason camp is next up for the Huskies.  Preparation for the 2010 season begins August 8th!

FRAME'S IN THE HUNT TO ADVANCE

By Zach Peters | Posted at 3:57 pm on Monday, July 12, 2010

After using a playoff to qualify for the 85th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship nearly three weeks ago, Andrew Frame is off to a solid start in today's first of two rounds of stroke-play qualifying.  While some of the field has yet to finish the round, Frame currently stands six strokes behind the leader in a tie for 21st after firing an even-par 71 at Bryan Park Golf & Conference Center in Greensboro, N.C.

Frame will attempt to make the cut tomorrow by staying in the top 64 finishers.  If he can do that, he will advance to match play, which starts Wednesday and ends on Saturday.  To follow along with live scoring, click here.

HUSKIES AND LINERS TEAM UP ON DIAMOND

By Brett McWethy | Posted at 10:02 am on Monday, July 12, 2010

John Sahly, Sports Editor of the DeKalb Daily Chronicle, provided a piece last week that featured how some Huskie baseball players are helping the DeKalb County Liners in the first half of their inaugural season.  Don't forget, you can follow NIU's "Boys of Summer" exclusively on NIUHuskies.com!

PRE-SNAP READ HIGHLIGHTS HUSKIES

Chris Smith is one-of 11 starters that return for NIU's defense.

By Brett McWethy | Posted at 9:46 am on Monday, July 12, 2010

Paul Myerberg from PreSnapRead.com profiled the Huskie football team over the weekend, focusing on everything from the high point of the 2009 season (BOILER DOWN!) to the starting quarterback race.  One notable that sticks out: Northern Illinois will dominate on defense.  Some publications have taken the other side of that argument; I'll go ahead and side with Myerberg.
