Smith, who was wrestling less than two hours from his hometown of Ida, Mich., pinned Central Michigan's Logan Shanks in the first period. He followed that up with a 9-6 decision against Michigan's Grant Pizzo in the quarterfinals and a 3-1 win against Eric Olanowski of Michigan State in the semifinals to set up a finals showdown with 2011 NCAA Championships qualifier Levi Mele of Northwestern. Smith would fall to Mele with a pin halfway through the second period.
